Bird Counts

EMAS volunteers conduct several bird counts each year. Spring migration counts are held throughout western North Carolina in May, while the Buncombe County Christmas Bird Count is held in December or January. If you are interested in volunteering for a bird count, please contact Marilyn Westphal (for Balsam and Black Mountains spring counts) or Jamie Harrelson (for Buncombe spring count and Buncombe Christmas Bird Count). Results of recent bird counts can be found below.

Information about the Christmas Bird Count can be found on the National Audubon Society's website: Citizen Science in Action. There, you can explore data from previous counts and learn about how the data are used.

View the western North Carolina Bird Presence and Distribution list, compiled by Marilyn Westphal. This list is very helpful if you want to know which species are present in WNC during certain times of the year.
